Now for the fun stuff:

Get to know me better

- GROWING UP -

Music has always been a part of my life. My father was a church musician and I grew up listening to him play organ and piano. I began piano lessons at age 3 because I begged to have them by pounding on the piano and screaming '“TEACH ME!” In all honestly, I started piano because my older sister was doing lessons, and I wanted to practice enough so I would be better than her (Typical young brother behavior).

Throughout my childhood, I sang in church choirs, school chorus, and musicals as well as played cello, percussion, bassoon, and continued my piano studies. I especially was drawn to the stage because of the ability to portray another character, dress up in costumes, collaborate with others, and be larger than life!

- MY JOURNEY -

In college, I majored in vocal performance with a minor in piano. I especially enjoyed accompanying singers in voice lessons because I had the opportunity to sit in on lessons and learn from so many talented teachers.

I had a difficult vocal journey. I am forever indebted to my teacher, Dr. Janette Ogg, who was not only foundational in setting my vocal technique, but is the reason I am a musician today. Because I have a uniquely high voice, I had tried to sing low by using excess tension which caused damage to my vocal cords. My early lessons consisted of working on my speaking voice to develop healthy speaking habits, which included accepting my naturally higher voice.

In graduate school, I specialized in early music voice and harpsichord performance. My voice specifically lends itself to the French Baroque Haute-Contre repertoire from 1600-1750. I enjoy studying ornamentation, and teaching others how to add embellishments to this repertoire!

It is because of my journey and struggles with my voice that I am called to teaching and working with students to find their authentic voices!

- TEACHING -

I have been teaching for the past nine years and am called to create a space of belonging for all my students through authenticity, vulnerability, and humor. Previously, I was on voice faculty at the University of Portland, where I had the opportunity to work alongside an amazing group of teachers and teach some amazing students. I have also worked at Imagination Stage as a music director and teaching artist. I love working in musical theatre and providing fulfilling experiences for my students!

Recently, I have focused on providing trans voice care for individuals who would like guidance in finding their authentic voices. This work is so important and necessary. Our voice is part of us, and it is imperative that everyone is able to access their authentic selves through their voice.

- PERSONAL -

When I am not teaching or performing, I enjoy spending time with my husband, Eric, and our cats, Rupert, Annie, and Bilbo in unceded Piscataway land colonized as Baltimore, Maryland.

I am an E-RYT 200 Yoga Teacher and love to incorporate that into my teaching! I have recently started to expand my yoga practice to learning more about meditation and philosophy.

I love cooking and baking, hiking, traveling, and grocery shopping! (I know it sounds strange to list grocery shopping - but it is my favorite past time for sure) If you’re interested in seeing my adventures, cute cats, and more - follow me on instagram!
